Picture
this; it's a bright and sunny morning atop a luscious grassy knoll,
the sea breeze cooling our face as the spray reaches the shore,
and the view stretches to the horizon and beyond. Then fill our
small slice of paradise with some of the most immaculate Dubs on
the coast, and we have Club VW Illawarra's annual car show at Bulli.
As
I cruised in with the Flat Four Vee Dub Club Sydney, I could already
guess at the quality of cars being brought out as Beetle after
Fastback after Kombi rolled in to complete our ocean side scene.
The ever impressive Sunbug made a simple yet stunning show as
the music was turned up and truly broke the ice for all that lovely
morning; not that there was any ice to break as all Club members
were already chatting before i got a chance to park my own Superbug.
What
amazed me most was the variety of style displayed in such a small
place, from custom street Bugs to kit cars, to completely orignal
Splits, to the brand new Golf R-32; it was all there. It gave
one a chance to get some great ideas for one's own project, that
is if you had time between listening to the live band and chatting
amongst complete strangers, united by the common passion for Volkswagens.
The authors of Volkwagen In Australia: The Forgotten Story came
along to peddle their wares and were happy to sign all copies
sold, and put on a great display with original sketches of the
classic and incredibly rare Hebmuller.
But
before i knew it, the sun had set, the kiosk had run out of snags,
and the Club were heading home. I smiled as I drove home that
day, glowing with the knowledge that there truly is nothing better
than a day out with the Dubs. Thanks go to Illawarra VW Club,
for all of their work on putting together such a beautiful show,
and I'm sure it will be even better in 2006.
