Well it has
been a while since our last drive-in cruise so what better way
than to have another one by seeing our favourite Oscar nominee
in action, Herbie!
The call was sent out for all Sydney VW lovers to rally the flag
for a cruise to the Bass Hill Drive-Ins to see Herbie Fully Reloaded.
As the day approached, the weather outlook was bleak but the spirits
were still high in anticipation of a decent turnout of Dubs.
Let me tell you the spirit of Volkswagens is well and truly alive
in Sydney and beyond (with a good showing of cars from our friends
from the Shoalhaven district). As I drove with my family to one
of the cruise meeting points, I was trying to calculate the type
of numbers that might arrive. I like to be positive but I have
seen Sydney cruises not live up to anticipated numbers before
and with a few brief showers that morning, the cloud still hanging
around and the undeniable fact of a cold night ahead I really
wasn't sure how we'd go.
As I turned into Memorial Avenue at the meeting point I was dumbfounded
to say the least. I expected to see maybe some 30 odd VWs waiting
but the carpark was packed with eager VW ethusiests much to my
delight. I have been told that at the meeting point there were
at least 60 cars!
As the numbers gathered, the buzz got louder, the chit-chat increased
and we knew we were in for a good night. A mass cruise then headed
to the drive-in down the Hume Highway like a giant python cutting
a swathe through the Sydney road network. We got plenyy of looks
and quite a few friendly horn blowings from on-lookers in their
bland, non-descript, ordinary cars!
Upon arriving at the drive-in we met up with many other Vee Dubbers
and I have heard reports ranging between 106 to 123 cars for the
night! What a great turnout, we couldn't have hoped for a better
result.
The only downer was the food queue to get something to eat. If
it had been on any other occassion you probably would have been
really peeved or even walked out of the queue but the hardy VW
lovers didn't let it put a dampener on an otherwise fantastic
evening.
The movie itself was as expected, light-hearted and very enjoyable,
even though as a collective audience we may be biased! When the
movie ended people must have realised just how cold it was as
the engines started as the credits rolled and people headed off
on their merry way. A few of us continued for supper at Krispy
Kreme Donuts....mmmmmmm.
Special thanks to Stuart Morris from the Club for being the drive-in,
I mean driving force behind organising a great night. And thanks
to everyone who showed up to make it a memorable night.
So when are they making another one???
